Preventive Maintenance Routine
Run this at every media or ribbon change, and schedule the monthly items.
- Power down and open the head. Let the printhead cool before touching it.
- Run a cleaning card. Feed a printhead cleaning card through the media path to lift adhesive and fiber the pen cannot reach.
- Wipe the element line. Use a 99% isopropyl cleaning pen or swab along the element line only, in one direction, and let it dry fully.
- Inspect and clean the platen roller. Rotate it and look for flat spots, grooves, or adhesive. Clean with isopropyl; replace it if it is scored.
- Clean the sensors and media path. Remove dust from the gap, notch, and ribbon-out sensors, then run media calibration.
- Verify settings and print a test label. Set darkness and pressure to the lowest values that produce a clean, scannable barcode.
Log the date and label count. A simple log tells you whether a head failed early, which is almost always a media, ribbon, or contamination problem worth fixing before the next head goes in.
