Freezer Rack Labels That Apply at -10F and Hold to -65F
Standard rack labels are made for ambient buildings. In a cooler or freezer they lift, curl, or drop off, and pickers end up keying locations by hand. CIS freezer-grade labels can be applied at temperatures as low as -10F and hold down to -65F once applied. Put them on clean, dry rack faces with no frost or ice, and the labels stay put.
The short answer
CIS freezer and cold storage rack labels can be applied at temperatures as low as -10F and hold down to -65F once applied, using freezer-grade adhesive on a water-resistant face stock, with freezer-grade magnetic labels and PVC placards available. Apply them to clean, dry rack faces with no frost or ice, and they are ready for cold storage.
Why standard rack labels fail in cold storage
These are common failure points in any cooler or freezer:
- Standard permanent adhesives are made for ambient temperatures and lose their grip in the cold.
- Frost, ice, or condensation between the label and the beam stops the adhesive from bonding. Every door opening can add moisture.
- Thin or paper face stocks can go brittle and crack in the cold.
The result is familiar: labels on the floor, labels taped back on, and pickers keying locations by hand. Every location typed in by hand is another chance for a mispick.
CIS freezer label options: apply at -10F, hold to -65F
The CIS installation guide puts the rule plainly: "Freezing installs require freezer adhesive and a face stock rated for the service temperature." From there, you have three ways to keep a label on a cold beam.
| Option | How it holds | When it fits | What the CIS guides say |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezer-grade adhesive labels | Adhesive made for cold storage, on a water-resistant face stock | Permanent locations in coolers and freezers | CIS warehouse guide: "Water resistant to prevent peeling due to moisture and humidity." CIS installation guide: "Freezer-rated for cold storage." |
| Magnetic labels | Magnet, no adhesive | Steel racking in freezers, especially where locations change | CIS warehouse guide: "Suitable for any environment, even deep freezers." Freezer-grade magnets are available. |
| PVC placards | Rigid PVC-backed placard | Where adhesive labels keep failing | CIS warehouse guide: "Freezer-grade magnets and PVC placards are also available." CIS installation guide: "PVC where adhesive fails." |
Freezer-grade adhesive labels
A freezer-grade label pairs an adhesive made for cold storage with a face stock that resists moisture and humidity. It is the usual choice for permanent locations that will not move. CIS freezer-grade labels can be applied at temperatures as low as -10F and hold down to -65F once applied. It goes on a clean, dry beam with no frost or ice, which the next two sections cover.
Magnetic labels
Magnets are worth a hard look in freezers because there is no adhesive to fail. They need steel they can grip, so check your racking first. For the full magnetic vs adhesive decision and the thickness choices, see our magnetic rack labels page.
PVC placards
PVC placards are available where adhesive labels keep failing. Ask us which mount fits your racks.
Uprights with teardrop holes
A common recommendation for uprights with teardrop holes is a magnetic label, because there is little flat surface there for adhesive to grab.
When to apply freezer labels, and how cold the beam can be
This is the question most cold storage teams ask first, often as "can we label without heating the beams?" Our answer: CIS freezer-grade labels can be applied at temperatures as low as -10F and hold down to -65F once applied. That covers new rooms and running freezers where the rack faces are at -10F or warmer. For colder rooms, tell us the room temperature and we will plan the labeling with you.
Why the timing matters
Every adhesive has a minimum application temperature: the coldest surface it will bond to when it goes on. CIS freezer-grade labels are made to go on as low as -10F, which is why we ask how cold each room runs when you request a quote.
Plan the labeling around your rooms
For a new room, label the racking whenever it fits the build. For an existing freezer, tell us how cold the room runs and your schedule, and we will plan the labeling around it.
Magnetic labels
A magnetic label skips adhesive, and the CIS warehouse guide lists magnets as suitable even for deep freezers. Freezer-grade magnets are available. See magnetic vs adhesive for when magnets make sense in the rest of your building.
Frost and moisture
Frost, ice, or condensation on the beam stops any adhesive from bonding. A label pressed onto frost is stuck to the frost, not the steel. Wipe the beam clean and dry right before each label goes on.
What we recommend
Tell us your room types and how cold each one runs. We will recommend freezer-grade adhesive labels, magnetic labels, or placards, and plan the labeling around your schedule.
Getting freezer labels to stay on
Prep does more for a freezer label than almost anything else:
- Clean and dry the beam right before you apply the label, with no frost, ice, or film. The CIS installation guide says rack faces "must be clean and free of dirt and dust."
- Use freezer-grade labels made for cold application. CIS freezer-grade labels can be applied as low as -10F.
- Keep labels in their packaging until you are ready to apply them.
- Press firmly and evenly. Do not reposition an adhesive label once it touches the beam.
- Spot check a pilot section before you label every aisle.
Check the location data before anything prints
Relabeling a freezer means working in the cold and pulling product off the racks, so a reprint hurts twice. CIS can run your location file through the CIS Label Data Validator, which runs 16+ automated checks, before production. Duplicates, sequence gaps, and format errors get caught in the spreadsheet, not on the rack.
"For Zion Solutions Group, a supply chain automation integrator, running their location data through the CIS Label Data Validator before print caught errors that would have meant about $15,000 in reprints."

What to send for a cold storage quote
- Room types (cooler, freezer, blast cell, dock) and roughly how many locations in each
- How cold each room runs, and whether any room is already in use
- New build or reset of an existing room
- Rack type, and whether the uprights have teardrop holes
- Scanner type (handheld, or long-range)
- Location file
- Photos of a typical bay
- Go-live date
