Warehouse Aisle Signs and Markers: Custom Signs That Match Your Rack Labels

Pickers and drivers find the aisle before they find the slot. A sign that is hard to read, or numbered differently from the rack labels, sends people down the wrong aisle. CIS makes hanging, rack-mounted and zone signs, plus floor marking, built from the same location data as your warehouse rack labels.

The short answer

Pick the aisle sign by where it mounts and who reads it. Hanging signs (flat, 45 degree, or Z-shaped) hang from cable or conduit. 90 degree bend signs mount on rack uprights, shelves, and bays. A-shaped signs mark back-to-back racks. Hanging cube signs show zones from all four sides. Match every sign to the aisle numbers in your rack labels and WMS.

Zone, safety, and floor marking

  • Large format signs: large signs to identify zones within the facility, easily readable from a distance, and can include text, barcodes, logos and other graphics.
  • Dock door signs: clearly identify loading doors and driving entrances, available for indoor or outdoor use, with text, numbers or barcodes.
  • Safety signs: warn workers and visitors of hazards, apply to doors, walls and equipment, full-color to grab attention. Conforms to ANSI and OSHA regulatory standards.
  • Floor graphics: custom printed self-adhesive vinyl graphics designed for industrial environments.
  • Floor tape: ideal for marking aisles, passageways and storage locations and identifying equipment and egress paths.
  • Dome mirrors: use in intersecting walkways, forklift routes and entrance areas to help prevent collisions at blind intersections.

Choosing the right sign

  • Hanging, above the travel path: flat hanging signs are single sided for walls and end of aisles. 45 degree hanging signs give one front-facing view, angled for easier scanning from the ground. Z-shaped signs print on both sides, angled down for ground-level scanning and viewing. 45 degree and Z-shaped signs hang from cable or conduit.
  • On the rack: 90 degree bend signs go on uprights, shelves and bays, printed on both sides. A-shaped signs mark back-to-back racks, printed on both faces.
  • Zones: hanging cube signs (4 sides, 360 degree view) and large format signs.
  • Outdoors or harsh areas: aluminum signs, indoor or outdoor, weather and rust resistant, with reflective options.
  • Placement: locate aisles from the main travel path, and make signs readable from the opposite end of the aisle. Keep height and position consistent across the building. See our warehouse rack labeling best practices.

What goes on an aisle sign

  • The aisle number or letter, large and high contrast.
  • Optional: bay range, zone color and arrows.
  • Exactly the same aisle ID as the rack labels and the WMS: same zero-padding, same direction.

Barcodes on signs

45 degree and Z-shaped hanging signs are angled for easier scanning from the ground, and dock door and large format signs can include barcodes. If you scan locations from a distance, see long-range retro-reflective labels.

One numbering scheme, from rack label to aisle sign

Signs, rack labels and floor locations should come from one location file. The CIS Label Data Validator runs 16+ automated checks on that file before print.

For Zion Solutions Group, a supply chain automation integrator, running their location data through the CIS Label Data Validator before print caught errors that would have meant about $15,000 in reprints.
