Why is my thermal label print faded or light?

Three usual causes, in order: ribbon chemistry mismatched to the facestock (wax on synthetic will not anchor), darkness and speed settings too low or too fast, and a dirty or worn printhead. Match chemistry first using the ribbon selection matrix, then reduce speed one step before raising darkness.

Which ribbon pairs with polyester labels?

Full resin. Wax and wax/resin will smear or flake off polyester under abrasion or solvents. See Premium Resin Ribbons and TT Polyester Rolls.

Why are my direct thermal labels turning dark or fading?

Direct thermal facestock reacts to heat, UV, and plasticizers. Labels stored near heat, in sunlight, or against vinyl and shrink wrap will darken or wash out. Move to topcoated DT for cold storage and moisture, or switch to thermal transfer when the label must stay legible for more than a few months.

What causes ribbon wrinkle and diagonal voids?

Uneven ribbon tension, a ribbon wider than needed for the label, or a printhead pressure imbalance. Use the narrowest ribbon that covers the print area, balance the pressure adjustments, and confirm the ribbon path is seated. Datamax and other near-edge printers also fail this way when the coated side is loaded backwards, see the Datamax coated-side rule.

How do I stop burning out printheads?

Run the lowest darkness that still passes a barcode verifier, clean the printhead with isopropyl alcohol at every media change, and never run abrasive synthetic stock without the matching resin ribbon. Preventive maintenance details are in the Thermal Printer Maintenance Guide.

How do I recalibrate media after changing label size?

Run the printer's media or gap calibration routine after every change in label length, gap, or core. Skipping calibration is the most common cause of skipped labels and content printing across the gap.

Do I need topcoated direct thermal for cold storage?

Yes for freezer and wet environments. Topcoated DT resists moisture, condensation, and abrasion; non-topcoated is only appropriate for short-life indoor use. See Topcoated vs. Non-Topcoated.

What core size fits my printer?

Industrial printers take 3" cores at 8" OD. Desktop printers take 1" cores, 4" OD on compact models and 5" OD where capacity allows. Mobile printers usually take 0.75" cores at 2.6" OD. Confirm maximum roll OD in your printer specification before ordering.
