Thermal Printer Repair

Discontinued Zebra Printer: Can It Still Be Repaired, and What Replaces It?

Zebra has stopped servicing a printer your site still depends on, and parts are getting harder to find. That does not mean the printer has to go in the trash. Most discontinued Zebras can still be repaired by an independent repair shop, as long as the failed part can be sourced. This page shows which Zebra models are discontinued and when service ended, how to decide between repair and replacement, and what replaces each model, plus what to check before you switch.

The short answer

Yes, most discontinued Zebra printers can still be repaired after Zebra's own service ends, as long as the failed part can be sourced. CIS repairs models like the GK420 through its repair depot, with 48 to 72 hour repair for most locations. If parts are scarce or the printer keeps failing, Zebra lists the ZD421 as the GK420 replacement and the ZT411 as the ZT410 replacement.

What "end of service" means for a Zebra printer

Zebra splits a printer's life into three stages: production, end of sale, and end of service. After end of service, Zebra stops firmware and security updates, stops selling spare parts and accessories, and stops OneCare support and repairs. Printheads are sold "while supply lasts." (Source: Zebra Printer Trade-Up End of Service Guide)

Zebra's own support pages tell owners of discontinued models to contact a Zebra Authorized Service Provider. (Source: Zebra GK420d support page)

The printer still works, and an independent repair shop can still fix it. Zebra just will not.

  • The last column is our general guidance, not a promise. Every repair depends on whether the failed part can be sourced. CIS repairs discontinued Zebras like the GK420. For any other model, ask us about your model.
  • Zebra also lists the ZD421 for some LP 2844 setups.
  • Dates and replacements come from each model's Zebra support page, checked October 8, 2026.

Repair or replace: how to decide

Repair makes sense when:

  • The printer has been reliable.
  • The failure is a common wear part, such as a platen roller, sensor, power supply, or a printhead that can still be sourced.
  • You run several of the same model.
  • Your label formats, drivers, and integrations are built around it.

Replace makes sense when:

  • The part you need cannot be sourced.
  • The printer keeps coming back.
  • You need wireless, current security updates, or 300 dpi.
  • You are standardizing a fleet anyway.

Many sites do both: they repair the units that are running now and plan replacements on a schedule instead of during a breakdown.

CIS can quote both in one reply, so you can compare the repair cost against a new ZD421 or ZT411. For the units you keep, follow our maintenance checklist.

Printheads for discontinued Zebras

  • Zebra has ended sale of printheads for several legacy models whose suppliers stopped making them, and it offers no replacement part numbers for them. The affected families include the 105Se, S300 to S600, XiIIIPlus, and 110PAX3. (Source: Zebra legacy printhead end-of-life FAQ)
  • For desktop models, ADC Barcode, a Zebra partner, reported on March 26, 2026 that printheads for the G-Series (GK and GX), ZD420, ZD620, and ZD500 reached end of sale as of March 11, 2026. (Source: ADC Barcode)
  • What it means: if your printhead is wearing out and you cannot source a new one, that is usually the point where replacement wins. For the units you keep, here is how to make your printheads last longer.

Moving from a GK420 to a ZD421

  • Match the print method. A GK420d (direct thermal) goes to a ZD421d. A GK420t (thermal transfer) goes to a ZD421t. (Source: Zebra ZD421 FAQ)
  • Order 203 dpi to keep formats the same size. The GK420 prints at 203 dpi. The ZD421 comes in 203 or 300 dpi. A 300 dpi printer prints existing dot-based formats smaller unless they are rescaled, so a 203 dpi ZD421 is the drop-in choice. (Source: Zebra ZD421 comparison guide)
  • Ribbons and labels. Ribbons used on GK420t printers work in the ZD421t, which takes 74 m or 300 m ribbons (the GK420t takes 74 m). Zebra says G-Series backwards compatibility lets you use existing formats and supplies. The ZD421 has a movable reflective sensor and a multi-position gap sensor, where the GK420 had fixed sensors, so recalibrate on first load. (Sources: Zebra ZD421 FAQ; Zebra G-Series transition flyer; Zebra ZD421 comparison guide) Need media for the new printer? See stock thermal transfer ribbons, stock thermal transfer labels, and stock direct thermal labels.
  • Check the cable before you order. This is the step people miss. The GK420 had serial and parallel ports as standard. On the ZD421, serial is a field-installable option and parallel is not offered. Ethernet and Wi-Fi are factory or field-installable options. If a GK420 runs on a serial or parallel cable, order the right ZD421 configuration or plan the switch to USB or network. (Source: Zebra ZD421 comparison guide)
  • Printer language. The ZD421 runs EPL2 and ZPL, so older EPL2 or ZPL formats can usually move across. The 203 dpi direct thermal ZD421 also offers EPL1 line mode. (Source: Zebra ZD421 FAQ)
  • Drivers. Install the current ZD421 driver from Zebra's ZD421 support page and set up the new printer as its own print queue. Do not repoint the old GK420 queue.
  • Accessories. ZD420 peelers and cutters do not fit the ZD421. (Source: Zebra ZD421 FAQ)
  • Pilot first. Print and scan your real labels on one ZD421 before you replace the whole fleet.

Moving from a ZT410 (or ZM400) to a ZT411

  • Zebra calls it a refresh. The ZT411 launched in October 2019 as a refresh of the ZT410, "not a completely new product," and Zebra says all ZT410 options are compatible with the ZT411. (Source: Zebra ZT400 Series FAQ)
  • Language. The ZT411 runs ZPL, ZPL II, and EPL, so existing ZPL formats usually carry over. Pilot with real labels anyway. (Source: Zebra ZT411 tech specs)
  • Ribbon and media. The standard ZT411 takes ribbon wound ink side out. An ink-side-in ribbon spindle and a 1 in. core media hanger are ZT411 options. Ribbon width is 2.00 to 4.33 in., up to 450 m. (Sources: Zebra ZT400 Series FAQ; Zebra ZT411 tech specs)
  • Coming from a ZM400. Zebra lists the ZT411 as the ZM400 replacement, and Zebra's partner FAQ says ZM Series ribbon and media can be used in the ZT400 Series as long as the size requirements are met. (Sources: Zebra ZM400 support page; Zebra ZT400 Series partner FAQ)
  • Resolution. Match your current dpi so formats print at the same size. The ZT411 offers 203, 300, and 600 dpi. (Source: Zebra ZT400 Series FAQ)
  • Drivers. Install the current ZT411 driver from Zebra's ZT411 support page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a discontinued Zebra printer still be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Zebra stops its own repairs after end of service, but an independent repair shop can still fix the printer if the failed part can be sourced. CIS repairs discontinued Zebras like the GK420, with 48 to 72 hour repair for most locations.

When did Zebra stop servicing the GK420?

Zebra's service and support for the GK420d and GK420t ended April 30, 2025 in North America. Zebra discontinued sales January 31, 2022.

What replaced the Zebra GK420d?

Zebra lists the ZD421 as the replacement. A GK420d goes to a ZD421d (direct thermal), and a GK420t goes to a ZD421t (thermal transfer).

Will my labels and ribbons work in a ZD421?

Usually, yes. Zebra says ribbons used on GK420t printers work in the ZD421t, and the ZD421 supports existing G-Series formats and supplies. Recalibrate the media sensor on first load, and pilot your real labels.

Will my ZPL or EPL label formats still print?

The ZD421 runs both EPL2 and ZPL, and the ZT411 runs ZPL, ZPL II, and EPL. Order the same resolution you have now (the GK420 is 203 dpi) so formats print at the same size, and test before rolling out.

What replaced the Zebra ZT410?

The ZT411. Zebra launched it in October 2019 as a refresh of the ZT410, and ZT410 options are compatible with it. Zebra's service for the ZT410 ended September 1, 2025 in North America.

What replaced the Zebra ZM400?

Zebra lists the ZT411. ZM400 service ended December 30, 2019. Zebra says ZM Series ribbon and media can be used in the ZT400 Series if the size requirements are met.

Are printheads still available for discontinued Zebra printers?

It depends on the model. Zebra has ended printhead sales for several legacy models, and a Zebra partner reported that G-Series, ZD420, ZD620, and ZD500 printheads reached end of sale in March 2026. When a printhead cannot be sourced, replacing the printer is usually the better choice.

Should I repair or replace my discontinued Zebra?

Repair if the printer has been reliable and the part is available. Replace if parts are scarce, it keeps failing, or you need features like wireless or current security updates. CIS can quote both so you can compare.

Do you offer on-site repair for discontinued Zebras?

On-site service nationwide is available for customers with a maintenance contract. One-off repairs go through the CIS repair depot, and you get the depot address after placing a repair order.

Do you repair brands other than Zebra?

Yes. CIS services all thermal brands, including Zebra, SATO, Datamax-O'Neil, Toshiba-TEC, and Printronix.
